Anti-hunting activists filed a lawsuit in June to stop the hunt. The Wildlife Legislative Fund of America (WLFA), on behalf of itself, the Sheboygan County Conservation Alliance, the Wisconsin Waterfowl Association and two local sportsmen, Craig Johnson from Hudson and Dean Hamilton of Wanakee, has moved to intervene in the case to support the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Animal rightists claim that the Wisconsin DNR illegally established a dove season. They say that the DNR has no authority to regulate mourning doves, a game species. Tens of thousands of Wisconsin citizens supported establishing dove hunting at the Conservation Congress hearings in April 2000. The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board performed a thorough scientific review and then approved the setting of a season in May, 2000. The issue then went to the legislature which tacitly approved the hunt. This allowed the DNR to set a season within the framework of federal guidelines established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. "Sportsmen worked hard to pass dove hunting and now we're going to have to work hard to protect it," said Bud Pidgeon, WLFA president. "People overwhelmingly support a Wisconsin dove season."
