WCFA Files Suit to Protect Wild Sheep Hunting

Columbus - The Wildlife Conservation Fund of America's (WCFA) Sportsmen's Legal Defense Fund has moved to intervene in a lawsuit recently filed by animal rights groups against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) that could halt Americans' ability to hunt an Asian wild sheep and damage wildlife conservation efforts in parts of Asia.

The anti-hunters' suit seeks to use the Endangered Species Act (ESA) to invalidate import permits issued by the FWS for the Argali sheep, an Asian relative of the North American bighorn sheep, and stop the Service from granting additional permits.

"The Fund for Animals is seeking to interpret the Endangered Species Act and its regulations to fulfill its anti-hunting agenda," said Bud Pigeon, WCFA president. "We disagree with this subversion of the law and will do whatever is necessary to stop this suit in its tracks."

The WCFA's Sportsmen's Legal Defense Fund (SLDF) is joined in the motion by Safari Club International (SCI). Both parties are working to allow the import of sport-hunted Argali sheep and to prevent it from being listed as "endangered." Such a designation would interfere with current conservation efforts being practiced by wildlife management professionals.

The WCFA is the companion organization of the Wildlife Legislative Fund of America. The WCFA does legal defense and public education work in defense of sportsmen's rights. The WLFA defends the rights of hunters, anglers and trappers in Congress and in state and local legislative bodies.

The Fund for Animals and other animal rights groups filed suit to virtually eliminate the hunting of these sheep in ranges within Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan where populations can withstand a hunting season.

The Wildlife Conservation Fund of America defends America's wildlife conservation programs and the pursuits - hunting, fishing and trapping - that generate the money to pay for them. The WCFA and WLFA are the only organizations in America that take as their sole mission the defense of sportsmen's rights. They conduct a variety of programs to ensure the defense of outdoor sports in America and the world. For more information about the WCFA and its work, call (614) 888-4868.
