Wildlife Legislative Fund of America Field Trialers' Victory: USFWS Agrees There will be No Field Trial Guidelines Columbus - After months of intensive calls and comments from field trialers and sportsmen across the country, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has officially shelved the idea of developing federal field trial guidelines for lands acquired with Pittman-Robertson (P-R) funds. In a recently released memorandum to the fifty state wildlife agencies, Marshall Jones, Acting Director of the USFWS, officially ended any push for guidelines. On August 16, the Service withdrew interim guidelines that would have negatively impacted field trialing, but left the door open for a redraft of the guidelines. Jones has closed that door. "We have maintained all along that field trial guidelines on these lands are unnecessary. Pittman-Robertson land is state land," said Rob Sexton, state services director for the Wildlife Legislative Fund of America (WLFA). "Now, the government has been persuaded that states are capable of managing their own land, as they have done successfully for decades." The WLFA has been coordinating the effort to defeat this attack on field trialers on behalf of the American Brittany Club; Amateur Field Trial Clubs of America; Associated Bird Dog Clubs of Ohio; German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America; Hoosier Field Trial Club; Indiana Field Trial Association and the National German Shorthair Pointer Association. "This decision would not have happened without the action of thousands of field trialers and sportsmen across the nation," said Sexton. "The WLFA is proud to have fought alongside such dedicated sportsmen to win this important battle." WLFA.org | |
