Survival Shelters
A shelter for survival is usually built in a hurry and made in a makeshift manner of the materials at hand. It is wise to carry along some materials to fashion a quick shelter if you spend any amount of time in a remote area. It is also wise to learn how to build shelters from only what nature provides. Survival situations seem to have a way of catching us unprepared and without all the tools and materials needed.
This section is not a comprehensive list of all shelters available, but rather, it will give me a place to show some different shelters as time goes on. The shelters will change from time to time so you can come back to visit and get new information.
To start with, I will show a Free Standing A-Frame Shelter using all natural materials found in the wilds. The only item I used out of my pack was a small rope and this can be fashioned from cordage made from Elm tree bark or a variety of other plant fibers. Rope can also be fashioned from animal hide cut in lengths and twisted into a rope.
Next, the same Free Standing A-Frame Shelter using a tarp or poncho that is carried for emergencies. This type of shelter goes up in a hurry and sheds water for a dry and warm night in the wilds.
Shelters are important in staying alive when forced into an unexpected overnight stay or forced to wait out a severe storm. Practice them in good times so they can be constructed properly in the bad times.
